Top Halloween/Scary Movies

In no particular order!

Don't Look Now

An ultimate classic, this film is a must watch. It's the best example of how you don't need blood, guts and special effects for a good scare. For extra fear, read up about all the different theories people have had about the film.

Fun Fact : The love scene from the film - between Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland - is very well known - for years people have claimed that rather then acting the scene, Julie and Donald were actually participating in actual sex!

The Exorcist

Not that I need to explain this! The Exorist was one of the most controversial films at the time of its release leading it to be banned! The 360 head spin, the spider walk and even the subliminal imagery all work together to make this one of the most disturbing films of all time. Warner actually had to hire bodyguards for Linda Blair for six months after the films release because of death threats!

Fun Fact : Many theaters supplied 'barf bags' with the viewing of this film.

The Fourth Kind

This is a film with a truly excellent astounding story line based around alien abduction. If you don't believe in aliens then you will certainly think again after seeing this film. It's disturbing, jumpy and creepy. Best of all though is the way it is shot and edited to make it completely realistic.

Fun Fact : The film - based in Nome, Alaska, realistically uses the fact that there are a string of disappearances in Nome. When police looked into 20 cases, 9 bodies were never found of these 20.

The Shining

Another classic that is based on the 1977 novel by Stephen King. This chilling film is the perfect scary movie to watch on Halloween and some of its most famous scenes - such as the 'Here's Johnny!' scene have been recreated time and time again in modern culture.

Fun Fact : Film historian Geoffrey Cocks has noted that the film contains many illusions to fairy tales, Hansel and Gretel being one example.

A Nightmare On Elm Street

Who can watch this film and not get scared?! Both versions of this film - the original, slightly humourous classic and the much darker and disturbing modern remake are excellent, providing lots of scares and hiding-behind-the-cushion worthy moments. Apart from the first film in the series, number 3 - Dream Warriors is the most spooky in my opinion.

Fun Fact : Johnny Depp actually has a role in this film from when he was still a relatively unknown actor. He initially went along to the audition to accompany a friend who wanted to audition, and was then given the part. The friend was Jackie Earl Hardy, who went on to fulfill the roll of Freddie in the 2010 remake, 64 years later!

Final Destination

Okay, so this franchise has completely sold out now but the first three - in particular the first ever film - were genuine and good. This film is more gory then anything and centers around the idea of cheating death. This is another film that is worth researching about afterwards as they're are loads of little spooky and quirky facts from the film.

Fun Fact : The latest Final Destination film is 'Final Destination 5', released earlier this year. When filming, a massive steel gimbal knuckle was needed, so the special effects team went in search of one. They found a man selling one he had sat in his warehouse for over a decade gathering dust - the team then discovered that it was actually the original gimbal used in the first film which had been missing for years!
The project executive from New Line Cinema took the screenplay of the first film to read on a flight with him to New York. The script was titled 'Flight 180' (the one from the film). He refused to read it after that.
During filming of Final Destination 5, an extra was sorting through old boxes of paperwork. He discovered a call sheet and a set of script slides from the first original film, in which he'd been an extra on 11 years earlier!

Scream

Scream is one of the most famous slasher films of our generation with the scream character becoming a regular halloween outfit since the release of the film. The first film starred Drew Barrymore and other famous stars such as Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell (who of course is best known for this role). Earlier this year a fourth film was released, 11 years after the last/third film.

Fun Fact : Dewey was supposed to die from his injuries in the first film!

The Frighteners

The Frighteners is a comedy horror film, but personally it is one of the scariest movies I have seen! It stars Michael J Fox - who can talk and see ghosts - who cons people with this ability. However when a spirit of a mass murderer comes back from Hell, he has to investigate.

Fun Fact : Michael J Fox had to redo some of his lines as he accidently called John Astin's character 'Doc' - which is obviously the name of Christopher Lloyd's character in Back To The Future!

Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity is most spooky because it is all centered around what happens when you sleep - aka the time when you are most vunerable! It has a simple storyline with the fear being built up so well - it's very jumpy! The third one is out in cinemas now!

Fun Fact : Apparently Steve Spielberg believes the film itself to be haunted. In 2008 he took a copy of the DVD to his Pacific Palisades estate and after watching it, the door to his bedroom locked by itself. He had to call out a locksmith.

Poltergeist

This film is another spooky horror film that is also a 1982 classic. It centers around the storyline of a family whose home is haunted by a ghost that abducts their daughter. This film has gone on to produce many sequels.

Fun Fact : Because of so many premature deaths featuring people involved with the film, it is believed that the film is cursed. Heather O'Rourke, who played the little girl that was abducted, sadly died shortly after filming (she appeared in three of the poltergiest movies) when she was just 12 years old. Apparently her ghost now haunts Paramounts Pictures Stage 19 where she filmed Happy Days.

The Amityville Horror

What's spooky about this film is that it actually is based on true events - the horrific Amityville Horror murders and then the supposed haunting of the house. It is a very well known haunted house and again, it's definitely worth reading up more about it and the spooky going ons. There are also some excellent documentaries about The Amityville Horror too.

Fun Fact : Who's that man - the main character going a bit mad - sporting a dodgy beard? Oh, it's only Ryan sexpot Reynolds!

What are some of your favourite horror movies? Have I missed any note worthy ones off this list?

Get Spooked

For those of you who don't have plans this evening and don't fancy sitting in front of the TV watching reruns of spooky films you've seen a million times before read on...

Why not scare yourself silly a bit different this year with these awesome spine tingling interactive games!

Ever wanted to stay in a haunted hotel? Well now you can on hotel626.com without leaving the comfort of your own room. Dim the lights, turn up the sound and check in for a scary night. Enable your webcam and microphone to add to the experience and be prepared to face demon babies, ghosts and much more. You'll also need to think on your feet as this website requires you to take part in tasks to survive!

Note - Unfortunately if you're too scared to watch it in the day then you're out of luck - the website is only open between the hours of 6pm - 6am. Of course you COULD always change your computer clock to gain access, but that's cheating ;)

Asylum626 is a sequel to Hotel626 and this time focuses more on being more personal - using Facebook and Twitter interactively. Friends can help you in the game if you choose these options which makes it a lot more realistic! This time around instead of waking up in a hotel you are instead woken up in, obviously, an asylum, held hostage by a mad doctor. And rather then defeating demon babies and such, you are forced to interact in scary flashbacks. Just as spooky and much more personal, this is the perfect game to play after hotel626. However, to view the final scenes you must purchase a bag of Doritos which is kind of annoying.

Hotel626 and Asylum626 were made as a marketing tool for Doritos crisps!

Takethislollypop.com is more disturbing then scary and was created to technically raise awareness of how much information you post online, in particular on Facebook. Watch as a pervy man accesses your Facebook account and looks through your life and be amazed at just how much information a complete (possibly crazy!) murderer can find about you, simply by your Facebook page.

If you go on any of these websites, do let me know what you think! Warning, not for the faint hearted though!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year as I absolutely adore anything spooky or paranormal! This year I celebrated Halloween over the weekend. Me and some friends went out on Saturday night for a friends birthday. Unfortunately we didn't dress up, I had planned to, but more about that in a bit. It was a fun night though and we all agreed we wished we'd dressed up in the end. We had a laugh though, despite the drama (not mine for once!) we had a bit of a drink and a dance and I managed to get the number of a fit barman who was at my brothers wedding last week (a bit random but I'm not complaining!)

I was supposed to go to Thorpe Park for Fright Night yesterday but having drunk little bit too much the night before, I wasn't really feeling up to it.

I also said I'd explain my posts about Red Riding Hood. Well, I'd planned to go as 'Little Dead Riding Hood' for Halloween. I was really looking forward to it, you can see the outfit I ordered below...

I love this outfit because its sexy without being slutty! I had it all worked out, I was going to do a massive claw mark on my face as if the big bad wolf had got me, with pale makeup and deep red eye catching eyeshadow. I also have loads of rub on scratch tattoo's from Freshers so I was going to put them over my arms. Yes, the fact that I wanted to go as little dead riding hood probably had something to do with the film and the hope that I'd get stuck in a love triangle with two sexy men as well!

Anyway I ordered from joke.co.uk and paid an extra £7.99 to ensure the outfit got here not only on time for Saturday but extra early as I knew they would be busy on Halloween. The outfit was meant to arrive on Thursday, but didn't, then on Friday the royal mail left a card saying I had to go and pick up the outfit because no one was home - despite the fact that I left a note for not one but TWO safe places! I was unable to collect it in time (having to wait 24 hours which by their hours would mean they would then be closed!) or have redelivered for Saturday. I was really gutted. The outfit still isn't here so I can't comment on the quality, but I'm hoping it's good and that I can keep it back for my themed birthday in December.

Nonetheless, I still love Halloween and will be spending my night scaring myself silly with a bunch of scary movies. What are your plans?

Red Riding Hood Review

Starring Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Shiloh Fernandez and Max Irons Red Riding Hood is a dark fantasy film based on the classic folk tale Little Red Riding Hood. The film is based around the village of Daggerhorn which is tormented by a wearwolf. Main character Valerie (played by Seyfried) is in love with Peter (Fernandez) but her family disapprove of him and have her become engaged instead to Henry (Irons) who's father is wealthy. When the wolf kills Valerie's sister, the town soon becomes terrorized and upon the arrival of Father Solomon (Oldman), fingers are soon pointed to as of who the wearwolf is.

This film got a lot of negative reviews but I fell in love with it - I thought it was beautiful in the darkest way possible. I adored the main characters, I loved how dark the film was and I really loved how it kept in original elements from the folklore legend whilst making it a bit more modern. I thought the love scenes were brilliant. In most films where the main character has the choice of two lovers you can either tell deep down which one they will end up with or have your own personal choice. This wasn't the case here ; I genuinely couldn't guess who she would be with and personally I really badly wanted her to be with both of them. One of the characters was dark and passionate, so wrong for her, whilst the other was  protective and loving. I really loved both of the two male leads.

The music in this film was excellent too, it was very different. One of my favourite scenes was one that featured just as the credits started rolling, the music went perfectly with what was featuring on the screen and it's a song that I have now downloaded.

The two so very gorgeous men in this film also made it extremely bearable! Shiloh Fernandez has that really edgy brooding look going on whilst Max Irons has the most gorgeous eyes and very, very sexy cheekbones. I think I've found my new celeb crush!

This film was dark, passionate and really showed a different view of the innocent 'Little Red Riding Hood' story we all know.  This film did get a lot of negative reviews so perhaps its not for everyone but I would suggest giving it a chance, especially if you like the kind of story lines that feature around forbidden/deeper love. As I said before, this film is dark but that's what makes it beautiful.
